Why Meta Title and Meta Description Matter So Much

Meta title and meta description are the two most visible elements of your search engine presence. They appear directly in Google search results (SERPs) and largely determine whether users click on your result — or your competitor's.

The meta title is also a direct ranking factor: Google evaluates which keywords are present in the title and uses this as a signal for the page's relevance.

The meta description is not a direct ranking factor, but significantly influences click-through rate (CTR) — and a higher CTR indirectly leads to better rankings.

Meta Title: The Basic Rules

Character Length

Google typically displays titles up to 50–60 characters. Longer titles are truncated. Recommendation:

  • Optimal: 50–60 characters
  • Minimum: 30 characters
  • Maximum: 70 characters

Keyword Placement

The most important keyword should be as far left as possible in the title — ideally in first position. Google weighs keywords at the beginning of the title more heavily.

Uniqueness

Each page needs a unique title. Duplicate titles are a common WordPress problem — they often arise from:

  • Archive pages (category, tag, date) with automatically generated titles
  • Paginated pages (/page/2, /page/3)
  • Product variants in WooCommerce

Meta Description: The Basic Rules

Character Length

Google displays descriptions up to 120–160 characters. Optimal: 130–155 characters.

Formulation

A good meta description:

  1. Mentions the main keyword
  2. Communicates the concrete benefit
  3. Ends with a call to action
  4. Reads like a human, not a keyword list

What Google Does with the Description

Google sometimes ignores your meta description and creates its own from the page content. This happens especially when:

  • The description doesn't contain the search term
  • The page content offers a more fitting excerpt

Common WordPress Mistakes

  1. No SEO plugin installed — WordPress outputs no meta description by default
  2. Duplicate titles from themes
  3. Titles too long or too short
  4. Keyword stuffing in the title
  5. Same description for all pages
